Snack Guidelines

Information for Parents – Snack

Playgroup follows the advice of “Setting the Table” which stresses the importance of good nutrition and a healthy balanced diet and acknowledges the role that we have in shaping children’s eating habits.

Snack time is an important part of our playgroup session providing an excellent opportunity for children to:

• practise personal hygiene by washing their hands before eating/drinking

• learn about healthy snacks and drinks

• learn about making their own choices

• learn to try new foods and chat about their likes and dislikes.

Children need a varied diet to ensure that they get all the nutrients they require for growth and development. Young children often have small appetites and need regular meals with snacks in between. Snacks provided at Playgroup are intended to be nutritious and low in added sugars to help prevent tooth decay.

Some snack foods, such as soft drinks, sweets, chocolate confectionery, chocolate and cream-filled biscuits, sugary pastries, sugary deserts, sweetened cereals, and sugared yoghurts, are not beneficial to children’s health. These types of foods should not be served regularly for snack at Playgroup.

If your child has any allergies or intolerances please let a member of staff know. If you and your child have a specific dietary preference, such as being vegetarian, please discuss this with staff in order that we can appropriately support choices.

Foods suggestions for snack include

  • Fruit: chunks, cubes or slices of apple, pear, satsuma, orange, banana, kiwi, melon, strawberries, pineapple and grapes
  • Vegetables: corn on the cob, carrot, pepper, celery, cucumber, cherry tomato.
  • Toast, breads, tortilla wraps, rolls, baps, French bread, pitta bread, croissant, homemade pizza, oatcakes, rice cakes, crackers, crispbreads, melba toast, muffins, plain, potato or cheese scones, crumpets, pancakes, plain buns, plain popcorn. (“breads” may be accompanied with butter or spread, jam, honey, marmite, cheese and cheese spreads)
  • Milk or water
